Dawn of Freedom is formed by a group of music loving Hongkongers currently living in Vancouver. All of them were born and raised in Hong Kong with some just recently arrived in Canada. With the political situation in Hong Kong, they want to take advantage of the freedom here to tell stories about Hong Kong through music. In their previous performances, they sang covers of songs that talk about the aspirations, courage, and despair of Hongkongers, some of the songs are either banned or are considered highly sensitive that are no longer played in Hong Kong. They hope to raise people’s attention to the changes that are happening in Hong Kong, and preserve and promote Cantopop along the way.
Jade Music Fest is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish Nation), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). We acknowledge our privilege to operate on these lands, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples whose music and culture encourages us to better listen to each other.
