Nothing to my Name

一無所有

Visual Artist

Lady Hao Hao

Music Artist

Cui Jian

Mandarin, China

The artist was moved by the straightforward and blunt language of the love song. While the lyrics remain open-ended, the artist hears the faith of the girl to follow her lover, and the courage of the speaker to demand love despite having nothing.

Mountain and Valley

高山低谷

Visual Artist

Lady Hao Hao

Music Artist

Phil Lam

Cantonese, Hong Kong

Taking on an abstract feel, the artist is inspired by the determination of the singer to climb to the top, even when it seems impossible. The numerous obstacles that crop up in life’s climb can push us to the verge of giving up, yet we all still yearn to reach the view at the top, regardless.

About / Lady Hao Hao

About / Lady Hao Hao

Lady Hao Hao is a visual artist originally from Taiwan; she feels that she has blossomed because of Canada. She enjoys using abstract concepts to express her inner heart, and refuses to let her originality be socialized. Every piece of her work is an intimate conversation between her audience and herself; like or dislike is just the beginning of their getting to know one another. Constantly reminding herself, an artist isn’t just a title nor a description of a job; it is about the purpose of the work or the responsibility of a person.

Like most immigrants, becoming proficient in English and finding ways to fit in were top priorities. The silver lining of not doing as well in improving her linguistic skill and keeping herself close to her community is the re-learning of her own heritage and identity. The cultural differences in Canada have also allowed her to appreciate herself as a person. In the world of arts, differences in cultures are easily conveyed; it has opened up the world for her. Finding herself is the biggest gift of her moving to Canada.

JMF - Seeing the Arts - Into The Wild

Into the Wild

Visual Artist

Li Tung

Music Artist

Tanya Chua

Mandarin, Singapore

Environmental issues are not an uncommon theme in contemporary art. However, the artist wants to explore that which few people are willing to face: What if we have missed the opportunity to stop the inevitable doom? What will happen after our existing world has come to an end?

The artist believes that humans came from the wild, but ventured too far into the city and started to forget what we are. We should take more time to get back into the wild and listen to its fantastic sounds. We talk too much. It’s time to listen instead to what nature tells us. To the artist, this would lead us to a better future.

About / Li Tung

About / Li Tung

An artist crossing many genres, Li Tung works in two- and three-dimensional arts, including painting, visual and installation arts, photography, calligraphy, performing art, impromptu dance, stage design, as well as game and multimedia design and creative writing. Born in Taipei, Li graduated from School of Fine Arts at the National Taiwan University of Arts. He is a member of the “Fifth Moon Group,” Taiwan’s most influential and longstanding artist collective. He has won awards in Taiwan for his art and novels and had his work displayed throughout Vancouver. Li has also performed live painting with improvising musicians and dancers. He is part of the acclaimed MAFIA Ensemble,  the leading force in Taiwan’s experimental and improvisational arts scene, with a particular focus on interdisciplinary practices.
