Melody, rhythm, lyrics—how does the music translate onto paper? How can we appreciate Chinese-language music through visual creativity?
This special program brings together local visual artists to create live artwork based on songs specially curated from the JMF playlist. By turning what we hear into something we can touch and see, the experience of a song is expanded in multiple ways!
A fun, exciting way to engage with new music and make new connections across Canada, and across the Pacific.
As Jade Music Fest continues to explore Chinese-language and heritage language music, we see an opportunity to expand our network of artists across artistic disciplines. This past April, JMF in Asia invited 10 Taiwanese visual artists to create live artwork to a JMF music artist’s song. Some of these artists are furthering their collaborations with these musicians through album design, and more.
This experimental program is all about stepping outside our comfort zones together. Let’s meet at the intersection of art and music!
*Artists that are able to understand Chinese-languages are preferred but not required.
*Selected artists will receive an honorarium of $100CAD for participating in this program.
*All participating artists have the chance to be selected as a lantern artist for The Lantern City in February.
In a world of sheep, be the black sheep that isn’t afraid to stand out!
Inspired by the upcoming Year of the Goat (Sheep), JMF is putting together a special playlist by JMF artists and Chinese-language musicians that are unique in their message of being “unapologetically me”.
What makes you, you? Is it the language you speak, the colours you prefer, the artistic vision you hold, or your dreams? We want to see artwork that reflects the music and emphasizes the joys of being different.
Find your inspiration in the songs, and show us your beautiful uniqueness!
Jade Music Fest is grateful to be held on the traditional, ancestral, and unceded territories of the Coast Salish peoples of the xʷməθkwəy̓əm (Musqueam Indian Band), Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish Nation), and Səl̓ílwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh Nation). We acknowledge our privilege to operate on these lands, and commit to work with and be respectful to the Indigenous peoples whose music and culture encourages us to better listen to each other.
